The Push To Build an Upper Program Continues...

Frank Vega of the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA)issued a press release today announcing the formation of the West Coast conference (WCC). The stated philosophy of the WCC is "to promote the play of slow pitch softball at the 'C' level and above." Over the past few years, there has been a tremendous decline in the upper divisions of softball. Players have resisted attempts of regulation and moving up, preferring to disband, and recongregate in lower divisions.

The Conference is sponsored by T A I / Elite Sports and hosted by the USSSA. These organizations have taken the approach of offering 'incentives' to get players and teams to move up. The Conference will be based in Arizona, California and Nevada for 2007 but is open to teams from any area that would like to be a member. Non members will also be welcomed to play in any event hosted by the Conference, but would not be eligible for Conference benefits.

The announced benefit package is reported to be:

* Team receives full uniforms for up to 12 Players. (Extra sets available). Uniform will include; Shoes, Pants, Tops & Batting gloves.
* Full schedule of events for teams at the B & C levels without having to travel outside the three states.
* An enticing and exciting awards package at each event.
* A West Coast Conference Finals with over $ 10,000 in Cash and Prizes.
* Complimentary West Coast Conference apparel for each team.

The press release also states that these benefits do not come without a committment. It appears teams' will need to pay a $350 fee to join the conference, play in a minimum of six events, sign a contract and post a credit card guaranteeing they will meet the minimums.

Any attempt to attract teams and players to move up, can only benefit the Southern California softball community in the long run. We look forward to reporting on these events in the coming year. The message boards are lighting up with talk of this event. Denny McAdams of Ponto's Nursery was quoted as saying, "I know that PONTO will be playing in this, for the main reason of seeing how we can compete at a higher level, and at the same time supporting a program, the B's and C's, and seeing if things can get back to how they were if not better than they were 10 years ago, damn 15 years ago..."
